The Covid 19 Teaching Nightmare Fallout

At our tutoring centre, due to the Covid 19 teaching crisis, we were inundated with frantic parents who had tried to teach their children during lockdown. There has been an aftermath since then and the repercussions might only be seen in years to come. However, much respect to all of you.
Many parents told us tearfully and some tipsily that it had not been easy to juggle jobs and to ensure that their children were doing their schoolwork set by the teachers.However, when they were trying to teach said work, when the children got stuck, I am positive that many thought, “$#@!!”
The frustration is real:
- Once they attempted an explanation, parents bemoaned the fact that their children either thought or said emphatically that they DID NOT HAVE A CLUE about the work.
- This might have proven all along what their children were thinking; THAT THEIR PARENTS DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING.
- Believe me, I have been there.
Surprise!
One parent, to her horror, found a pile of unopened assignments after three weeks of confidently thinking that her child was dutifully completing them, as a responsible new high schooler should. She contacted us immediately!
You have done your best
Those years were tough with many unknowns and uncertainties and it had thrown many people out of whack. It was important to take a step back and breathe because you, as a parent, had knuckled down and did the best that you could do. Your knees might have buckled a bit, you might have lost it so now and again but you carried on like a trooper.
What we have seen regarding the Covid 19 teaching nightmare fallout:
- We have seen many children who had been trying to teach themselves feel totally frustrated and demotivated.

- Imagine trying to teach yourself High School Maths! Especially when you barely coped with Grade 7 Maths and did not have a clue.

- Although children had dedicatedly tried to work, many gave up due to frustration because they needed someone with insight to break the work down into easy to understand bits.
- Currently, we can see that this has definitely affected them negatively.

- Many have lost confidence in their abilities.
- There are learning gaps that need to be addressed.

- There is a term for the backlog experienced by the children. It is called the ‘Covid Slide’. Yes, it has a name!!
- The struggle is real.
Newsflash! Teachers are important!
Keep the Hope alive
We cannot give up hope and Candice Lapin states that it is important to have a positive mindset. Instead of saying that the children are falling behind, see it as a pause and recovery phase. We will have to deal with the outfall proactively and address the challenges that follow. We cannot cram extra work and add extra days to schooling. Children can only cope with what they are able to cope. Over the holidays, rest and recuperation are vital for both mental and physical wellbeing. Children are adaptable and they will find a way to pivot.
